MathKit Privacy Policy

Last Updated: Dec. 4, 2025

MathKit ("we," "us," or "our") values your privacy. This Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the MathKit Chrome Extension and our associated services.

1. Information We Collect

A. Personal Information

When you log in to MathKit using your Google Account, we collect the following information provided by Google:

  • Name
  • Email Address
  • Profile Picture
  • Google User ID

B. Content Information

To render your equations, we process:

  • LaTeX Strings: The mathematical text you type into the editor.
  • Presentation Metadata: The ID of the Google Slides presentation you are editing (to insert the image correctly).

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information for the following specific purposes:

  • Authentication: To verify your identity and maintain your session.
  • Rendering Service: We transmit your LaTeX strings to our self-hosted backend server to convert them into high-quality PNG images.
  • Google Slides Integration: We use your Google OAuth Access Token to insert these generated images directly into your Google Slides presentations and to update existing equations.
  • Service Improvement: To monitor the health of our API and fix bugs.

3. Data Storage and Infrastructure

MathKit operates on self-hosted infrastructure.

  • Direct Control: Unlike services that rely entirely on public cloud platforms, our backend and database are hosted on private servers directly managed by the MathKit team.
  • User Accounts: Your account profile (Name, Email, ID) is stored securely in our self-managed PostgreSQL database.
  • Equations: We do not permanently store a history of every equation you generate in our database. Generated equation images are cached temporarily in our server's memory to allow Google Slides to fetch and display them. The permanent record of your equation exists within your Google Slide itself (stored in the image's Alt Text metadata).
  • Tokens: OAuth Access Tokens are stored securely in our database to allow the extension to function without requiring you to log in every time you open a slide deck.

4. Google User Data Policy (Limited Use)

MathKit's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

  • Scope Usage: We request the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/presentations scope solely to insert and modify the equation images within the presentation you are currently editing.
  • No Sale of Data: We do not sell your Google user data to third parties.
  • No Advertising: We do not use your Google user data for advertising purposes.

5. Third-Party Service Providers

Because we self-host our application logic and database, our use of third-party providers is strictly limited to network infrastructure required to keep the site online:

  • Network & Security: We may use content delivery networks (such as Cloudflare) or infrastructure providers (such as Hetzner) solely for DNS resolution, DDoS protection, and physical server hosting. These providers do not have access to your database contents or Google credentials.

6. Data Security

We implement strict security measures to protect your data on our self-hosted infrastructure:

  • Encryption: All data transmitted between the extension and our server is encrypted via SSL/TLS (HTTPS).
  • Access Control: Direct access to the server and database is restricted to authorized administrators via secure keys.
  • Updates: We regularly update our server operating systems and dependencies to patch security vulnerabilities.

7. Children’s Privacy (COPPA & FERPA)

MathKit is a productivity tool intended for use by teachers and educators. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us.

For schools and districts: MathKit is designed to be compliant with FERPA regarding the handling of educational records. We act as a 'School Official' with a legitimate educational interest in processing this data solely to provide the equation editing functionality. Because we self-host, your data is not passed through complex chains of third-party data processors.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request the deletion of your account and associated data.
  • Revoke MathKit's access to your Google Account at any time via your Google Account Security settings.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the 'Last Updated' date.

10. Contact Us

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, please contact us by email at [email protected].

We believe in honest and transparent data practices.
